I'm on a Doris kick, so I stayed up tonight - putting off packing up my apartment - to watch
Pillow Talk. I can't even tell you how much she reminds me of my mum's mum! If you haven't seen the movie, you have to. Oh!!
Rock Hudson and Doris Day's roles in the movie remind me WAY too much of how my grandparents met. My granddad was the 'Brad Allen'; all the ladies loved him even though they knew what a playboy he was. He grew up in Texas, and the birds in Iowa fell super hard for his cowboy manner. One night, my grandma and her friends were out on a hayride with my granddad and his buddies .. paired up, sitting boy-girl-boy-girl, and every fifteen minutes (you're not gonna believe this) my granddad would blow a whistle so the pairs would switch up. The girls had no idea!! They were livid, but in the middle of nowhere so they had to entertain it. When Merleen got to Warren, she let him have her mind. She snapped, he fell in love. 55-plus years later, they're married and too infatuated ... playing bingo twice a week and holding hands everywhere they go.
I went to visit them in Nevada for spring break and they took me to their local bingo hall. My granddad is still a total cowboy, and years have done nothing to wear off his sly charm. There's a certain Peggy who has a thing for him, so my grandma never lets him go alone! When we went, she walked in, scouting the room. She didn't see her, so she asked, "Warren, is your Peggy here?" he said - with a ridiculous smile on his face - "No, but Carol is!" HA! She hit him on the arm, then repeated the hayride and whistle story, linking arms and laughing. I know she relives that moment all the time. Man, these two are great. I'll scan some pictures of them in a little bit, but for now, I'll just share Rock and Doris. Know that the four are identical, and that soulmates exist. :)
